Cheekpoint is a small picturesque village situated on the southern bank of the Riverf Suir. The village has a strong maritime history stretching back to the days of sail as a mail station and a once-thriving fishing community.
Myra Desai, who lives in Enniskerry, pennd this poem about Cheekpoint and dedicated it to the traditional fishermen of the River Suir.
“Thanks to my late father and the people of Cheekpoint and th Suir Estuary I have such wonderful memories. So said to realise that future generations might not know of what the poem tells, ” she said.

Sean Doherrty, well-known in the fishing sector at Cheepoint who drew Myra’s poem to myh attention said: “It sums up quite well the failures of State agencies. Myra hails from a long tradition of fishing heritage in Cheekpoint. Many, many similarities exist in modern Ireland today. I believe that fishermen were respected back in the 1970s, but I find it difficult to understand how fishermen are regarded today as ciminals if i fish species as my family had done for centuries.
